Pink Lemonade, 2017
I chose to paint about a song called Pink Lemonade from rapper Watsky's album x Infinity. This song makes me feel excited and happy, mostly because they lyrics are really obscure but tie back into the theme of the song which I interpreted to be "reality". The theme of reality inspired me to draw a tree grasping a pink lemon. The tree is meant to represent a hand holding something that doesn't exist. The snow adds to this, as fruit can't grow in the cold. I mean, pink lemons are real, but the rind isn't pink and it isn't used to make pink lemonade. Because Pink Lemonade harbors some explicit language, I chose to write some lyrics in Old Norse runes. This also gave me the opportunity to include some history- as vikings had some really iconic trees in their culture and beliefs, like the World Tree, which connected all 9 Norse worlds in their perceived reality. At first I was going to do a split canvas - with half bright and warm colors, and the other dark to show the different realities like in Stranger Things. But I decided to paint lyrics on top of that and then cover it with the black and gray background pictured above. Some emotions that this painting gives me are imagination and creativity.
